Jailbreaking Your Kindle

Looking to jailbreak your Kindle? You’re in the right place to get started!

Here are some important things to note before you begin. This information applies to all modern jailbreaks (legacy ones, in how they function, slightly differ.) Read EVERYTHING on this page.

What's a Jailbreak?
All jailbreaking allows you to do is run external code on your device (E.g., KOReader, or other apps). The Kindle is not affected in any other way, so all other features will remain (Kindle Unlimited, Store, etc...). This is alike to Android rooting, or iOS jailbreaking. Jailbreaking is a process, not an Operating System or firmware, so you cannot "install" a jailbreak, within itself it is not an app.

Is this Piracy?
Jailbreaking and piracy are not the same. You can sideload pirated content without having a jailbreak. Do not seek official KindleModding or KindleTweaks organisation support in regards to piracy.

Which Jailbreak is Best?
Fundamentally, all jailbreaks are the same. They are different methods that all lead to one unified goal, as other methods become patched. The Jailbreaking wizard will tell you the most appropriate jailbreak for you to use, once you get to that step (keep reading.) This means you can never "update" a jailbreak.

What happens after the Jailbreak?
After the jailbreak, many different tools get automagically installed for you, which for the most part, you will not have to interact with. This includes update blocking so the jailbreak does not get removed, a package manager, etc. Once you're jailbroken you can begin installing your own software right out of the park using the inbuilt package manager. You will be guided through this in the "What's Next?" section, after you jailbroke.

Can I remove the Jailbreak?
Yes. If you wish to remove the jailbreak, you must run this scriptlet ('scriptlet' term definition), factory reset the device, then push an update (whether it be to the same firmware, you can download an update file from FTVDB, place it in the Kindle's root and hit the update button). After this, every trace of the Jailbreak will be removed.

Who can I ask for help?
When in doubt, please consult someone on the official KindleModding Discord, or KindleTweaks. r/kindlejailbreak on Reddit is also an available option, although a community resource. Do not perform dangerous actions such as a Factory Reset without an experienced person's advice (e.g., KindleModding Helpers).

Additionally, do not expect support if you have not even bothered to have read this.

With that out of the way,

You can begin the process here. When the wizard identifies which jailbreak you should use, it will also notify you to fill up the Kindle to temporarily prevent automatic updates, and I am reiterating this. Knowing all of this information, it is far more likely you will have a safer and more enjoyable jailbreaking experience! :)

Also, for those who are curious (or do not actually know what a jailbreak can lead to), here is a list of some jailbreaking pro’s-and-con’s, just to get an idea of what’s in store.

Pros

  • Access to an active community of other 40,000+ members,
  • Get KOReader, an alternative, open-source, customisable reading experience,
  • Download RAnki, or other flashcard apps for study purposes,
  • Use the Kindle’s Bluetooth for purposes outside of listening to audio, e.g., page turners or connecting keyboards,
  • Linking on to the above, take advantage of the Kindle’s anti-glare screen for writing (e.g. via bluetooth keyboard) - not purely reading (particularly for non-Scribes),
  • On a whimiscal note, play games, like Wordle, Chess, and Minesweeper (perhaps DOOM?),
  • Learn how to make your own Kindle apps with a mass of public documentation!,
  • Change the default Kindle screensavers,
  • Patch the default browser with modifications, VNC, SSH, and so much more….

Cons

  • Purchasing a Kindle with the sole intent to jailbreak may backfire as there’s a decent possibility it could arrive on an un-breakable firmware.
  • Certain tweaks could cause lag/performance issues, but this isn’t because of jailbreak itself.
  • Everyone will know you as “that weird person who jailbroke their Kindle and plays doom on it” (did I mention it plays doom?)
  • You will inevitably deal with vexing people who have not read the above page which outlines basic jailbreaking concepts.
